PASSING STRANGE
Book & Lyrics By Stew, Music by Stew & Heidi Rodewald
Directed by Brien Lang, Music Direction by Tom Grace & Matt Requintina

ABOUT PASSING STRANGE
A ground-breaking, adventurous rock-musical about a young African-American's journey to find himself as he traveled from his roots in Los Angeles, to Europe and back. Nominated for 14 Tony awards, winning four, including Best Book and Outstanding Musical.

Don't miss the Rhode Island premiere of this critically acclaimed new musical that takes you on a journey across boundaries of place, identity and theatrical convention. Stew, a popular performer at Joe's Pub, was commissioned by The Public Theater of New York to develop this heartfelt and hilarious story of a young bohemian who charts a course for "the real" through sex, drugs and rock and roll. Loaded with soulful lyrics and overflowing with passion, the show takes us from black, middle-class America to Amsterdam, Berlin and beyond on a journey towards personal and artistic authenticity.

"A great production of an excellent and exciting musical. And The Wilbury Theatre Group has put together a top-notch cast who are clearly having a blast while providing the audience with an enormous amount of entertainment. Already a go-to place for less-familiar, new and exciting plays, the Wilbury Group may also be the place for exciting, unique and new musicals that you may not have seen or heard of before." -Broadway World Rhode Island

"The theater event of the season...Like the personality of most artists who embark upon an adventure to find themselves and their place in this world, Passing Strange is edgy, eclectic, amusing and ambitious." -EDGE Providence

JOIN US FOR a TALKBACK!

Big in Europe: Music and the African-American Experience
Friday, December 4th-After the 7:30 performance

Like the Youth in Passing Strange, many people of color traveled to Europe in order to more freely explore their art and identity before they became 'legitimate' in the United States. This talkback will examine how black artists were perceived in the US and the conditions that led to this creative migration. How did Europe accept these artists and how did the influences gathered during this time affect the artistic landscape we know today?

Join Professor Radiclani Clytus, Assistant Professor of English and American Studies at Brown University; and Jack Kleinsinger, producer of "Highlights in Jazz," the longest running jazz concert series in New York City, as they tackle these questions and more!
As always, The Wilbury Group's talkbacks are completely free and always open to the public. Come join us  to discuss the themes and topics explored in the play.
