ABOUT
Stupid Fucking Bird
By Aaron Posner, sort of adapted from The Seagull by Anton Chekhov, Directed by Mark Peckham

JANUARY 21-February 13
extended by popular demand!

ABOUT STUPID FUCKING BIRD
In this irreverent remix of Chekhov's The Seagull, an aspiring young director rails against art created by his mother's generation, a nubile young actress wrestles with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist, and everyone discovers just how disappointing life, art, and growing up can be. Chekhov's characters still ruminate on love, revolution and the pursuit of happiness, but this time with a lot more snark as the subtext bubbles to the surface. With music, meta-theatricality, and mad humor, playwright Aaron Posner beats The Seagull to a bloody pulp.

REVIEWS OF THE WILBURY PRODUCTION:
“Stellar ensemble soars in Wilbury Group's fantastic Stupid F#%*ing Bird... As deep and profound as it is cheeky and satirical. And it's absolutely, undeniably hysterical. With an amazing cast leading the way, Wilbury Group has set the bar very high, and even though it's only January, this may be the funniest play you will see in 2016."-Broadway World

"First-rate performances... In a snap-fire three-act production in about 2 hours 15 minutes it manages to take a look at a group of arts world folks. It peels away the covering, let's us in the audience see their troubles, exterioir and internal. And, perhaps, even offers us a chance to think about our own lives." -RI NPR

"A wild ride with moments of truth... this is not an easy play to digest, but it offers lots to think about. And it has these moments of truth that, no matter how uncomfortable, ring true." -The Providence Journal

"A hilarious and unpredictable ride...Stupid Fucking Bird is Wilbury at its best. No other company in the state is doing shows like this, and few could approach this play with such understanding and tact. It’s irreverent, it’s dark, it’s funny, it’s deep, it’s punk as f*ck. You don’t wanna miss this one. -Motif Magazine

"Wilbury Theatre once again proves to be Rhode Island’s most cutting edge theatre with its latest production of Aaron Posner’s Stupid *** Bird...Director Mark Peckham has assembled a great ensemble cast of seven who captivate the audience with acting that could be labeled as absurdist and way out of the box." -Cranston Herald/Warwick Beacon

"
Splendid..a rich and rewarding update of The Seagull...The show is simply beautiful, a funny and philosophical yearning for authenticity in our lives. Yes, that title does contain an explicative, one that reflects the frustration in our search for meaning, but I’m here to tell you that this is a bleeping wonderful show. Alternately hilarious and insightful, the show packs a cathartic wallop and is a must-see for folks who care and think about life, love, art and all that good stuff." -East Bay RI

"
Brilliant, hilarious... If you're not familiar with The Seagull, that's no excuse to miss this unique, exciting work of theater. If you're not a fan of Chekhov, that's all the more reason to experience "Stupid Fucking Bird," because not only does it make the Russian playwright more enjoyable and accessible, but it's also The Wilbury Theatre Group at its best." -Edge Providence

Why new forms?
The search for a “realer” theatre
Join us Friday, February 5 following the 7:30pm performance of Stupid Fucking Bird for an in-depth look at the creation of New Forms in theatre. How have familiar stories evolved as the theatre has? What stays the same? Join celebrated playwright Erik Ehn, Chair of Brown University's Theatre Arts and Performance Studies for this can’t-miss discussion on where theatre has been, and where it’s going next.

As always, The Wilbury Group's talkbacks are completely free and always open to the public. Come join us  to discuss the themes and topics explored in the play.
